Here for you too @Former-Member you should take a look st thr love hearts thread theres a heap of cute inrs and quotes on there

Re: 1st appointment with psychiatrist - what to expect?

hello @Former-Member

The idea of going into a mental clinic for the first time is frightening even for those of us who hold no stigma to mental illness.

Every person's stay is different. This factor is determined by your psychiatrist as he or she monitors the catch ups with you as well as some actually reading the nurses' notes.

There are day programmes. Again depending on the individual and how distressed they are attending these varies also. You will be able to gauge this once admitted. Allow yourself a couple of days to settle in.

If you feel upset, tearful, frightened or concerned let the nurse who is looking after you for that shift, know. (they should introduce themselves) if not, just ask who your nurse is at the nurses station in your ward.

Don't be frightened of the nurses either. I find the more that you talk to them, the more care you get.

The main thing when in hospital is to rest, breathe, let emotions come to the surface. Dont worry about crying your eyes out. Most people do.

As far as your family. You could say something along the lines of: I have talked to my psychiatrist and we have made a decision that I need a little more closely observed care at the moment. So please accept that I am looking after myself, be gentle with me and I do understand that you care.

Further questions. I need to focus on me to help myself get better. I appreciate your support even though you dont understand. I do love you.

hope this helps.

love hearts thread? will try and find thanks xx

Re: 1st appointment with psychiatrist - what to expect?

You are all so kind, thank you @outlander and @Former-Member I don't know how much worse I would feel if I didn't have you guys to talk to. Your advice is very helpful @Former-Member. I have private health cover and it says it covers psychiatric treatment but if going to a private hospital will only cover the equivalent cos of being a private patient in a public hospital. I guess I would have to ring the hospital and the health insurance to find out

Re: 1st appointment with psychiatrist - what to expect?

Always here for you to talk to @Former-Member both good and bad
Yeah maybe have a talk with your psych tomorrow as well please be honest and say how you really feel ok. Don't be afraid

What time is your appointment tomorrow?

Also if you want good news i hve greys anatomy season 13 nd im up to episode 10

Re: 1st appointment with psychiatrist - what to expect?

hello @Former-Member

Yes best to ring and check just give them the name of the facility if you have it. They will also confirm your excess amount.

It is all very daunting first time around and wearying; you will get some well deserved care. xxx

Re: 1st appointment with psychiatrist - what to expect?

Hi @Former-Member. Just saw these posts.
Your psychiatrist will say which private hospitals he works out of. Then contact your insurance provider and make sure you are fully covered & if not fully covered - what do you have to pay for. Some might require you pay an excess. And I always pay for any medication scripts they fill while I'm in there.
My first hospital stay last year - I think I slept for at least the first 2 or 3 days. I was so exhausted from trying to fight off my depression. I felt really safe at both hospital stays, both with the staff and with the patients. In fact I think the other patients have a lot to offer each other.
Your work - you don't need to tell them unless you choose to. All they need to know is you saw your doctor and now your in hospital. They don't need to know which dr and for what illness. That is entirely at your discretion.
Hospital will give you a chance to rest up, be looked after, your medication monitored or changed, the chance to learn some new coping techniques. Hopefully you will experience some AHA light bulb moments thatrreally help you with your recovery.
If you have private health insurance - use it to go to a private hospital - not a public one.
You have made a tough decision but one I think will benefit you greatly.
Well done for making this decision. It's scary when it's something new and unknown. So well done for fighting through that fear.
All my best wishes for you.

Re: 1st appointment with psychiatrist - what to expect?

Thanks @utopia yes I've been to a few public ones over here (I'm a nurse so reviewing some older adult MH patients) and I can't imagine being able to relax if I was there. Especially because I know some of the staff... I will see what the psychiatrist says tomorrow. He might not think I should go. Maybe he will want me to try some different tablets. Something, anything, is better than continuing this way. I'm confused about what I'm feeling and what's real and what's a dream and that's scary, I've never felt disconnected with reality like this. I really hope it isn't going to cost too much in the hospital because I really need a break from everything

@outlander I have finished the season now, it's really good.
