Career Chat // Handling Rejection // CLOSED

Hi everyone!

Rejection is a fact of life when you’re job hunting and it’s hard not to take it personally because every rejection pushes all your buttons!

“I’m not good enough”

“I’ll never get a job”

“I have no luck!”

What is even worse is the rejection letter that never arrives … it’s like you don’t even exist!

Let’s face it job hunting can be less than enjoyable … you are bound to get stressed and yes rejection will be a part of it.

But luckily there are many empowering things you can do to lessen the sting!

We’ll be talking about these and sharing experiences about rejection (and how we coped!) this Friday on our weekly forum.

The session will be hosted by Ostara and will kick off this Friday at 10am AEST.

2 things you can do now:

1. Hit the 'Like' button below to get an email reminder on the day

2. Can't make the session? Leave a question below, and we will answer it on Friday

Re: Career Chat // Friday 22 April, 10am AEST // Handling Rejection

Good morning ... Renstar here 😊
How are things going?
On today's forum we are going to talk about handling job rejection and how it feels to be rejected ... We are hopefully going to share some really good strategies and coping mechanisms too!

But first it's important to acknowledge that maybe we've been rejected for jobs many times... And whilst we know there are things we can do to help we also know it's important to acknowledge that employment rejection can hurt and lead to some really low moods some really bad feelings.

To get to a stage where we can cope with and deal with that rejection we need to 1st validate and say ... "You know what this is tough!!! ... " 😩
Is anybody going through job rejection right now?

Re: Career Chat // Friday 22 April, 10am AEST // Handling Rejection

Hi @Renstar

I'm not experiencing rejection at the moment, but I have been in that position.

I now have a great job that I really enjoy, so in retrospect, those rejections that led me to the job I'm in now! 🙂

Re: Career Chat // Friday 22 April, 10am AEST // Handling Rejection

... Just looking at some resesarch that says (what we already know!) that long term unemployment can lead to depression

Depression feels like a lead weight ... feels like having a personality change sometimes!

hey where did my happy face go?? why do i feel so down?

Depression is real and if it's happening to you then you're not alone, a study in '93 revealed a whopping 23% of people looking for work felt some depression (compared to 5% of the normal population) ... that study was done a long time ago and i'm afraid the stats are probably higher now!

If this is you then it's ok to feel it .. admit it and seek help for it - hey that's what Sane.org is for!

Hi Coffeegirl

Smiley Very Happy great to hear from you!

So glad you have a great job now ... hey do you remember that sinking feeling with each rejection?

Would you share what that was like for you?

Re: Career Chat // Friday 22 April, 10am AEST // Handling Rejection

well here's what happened to me ..

when i was unemployed and looking for work it started to feel as though I would never find work ... there were so many rejections!

I couldn't help but take them personally ... I just did

I also felt like if only they could meet me! Get myself infront of them then I could talk my way in! but of course that required the elusive interview ...

Being rejected from jobs,  I can say, made me feel down about myself quite often ... sometimes depressed and it was hard to stay motivated

That's my story ....

Hi Lisajane

This probably isn't the place to give you HR advice ... but I've just called a HR Manager and this is the inforamtion provided with a full disclaimer that it's heresay andj ust a guide.

.....

Legally there's no requirement because it's personal information ... however if you do talk to your employer then they have a better idea of how to help you and they're more likely to be undestanding

if you don't tell them then if you start taking time off you risk them making assumptions about what's going on and that could affect your employment too.

Also you are NOT obliged to tell about it unless it means you're not going to be able to do the job you currently do ...

Your employment contract will reveal more about what could happen but it's such a grey area!

The final word is there's no obligation but ... doing so could help because then your employer fully understands the situation and can prevent them making false assumptions about why you're away etc.

There are discrimination laws in place that means you can't be dismissed also it's a HR/legal question Lisajane  ... and again full disclaimer that the above is heresay and just a guide Smiley Happy
