Mixed Emotions

My 18 year old son (latest diagnosis schizoaffective disorder), is moving out of home today to attend university which is approximately 3 hours away.

we are so proud that after 4 years of significant ups and downs, he has managed to reach a point of recovery that offers hope for a really good future.

as his mother, I am very anxious, excited for him and nervous.  We have made arrangements to transition his medical support and care and reached out to local mental health teams.  I am so worried about medication compliance, alcohol abuse,

potential for relapse and more.  I realise I am lucky he has got this far, but terrified

that all of our support and good work could unravel in an instance.  I think I need

support just as much as him at this time,  scared, yet hopeful.

@Boo13

Kidadults finding their own way = tricky times MI or not.

There are of course no guarantees, learning self responsibility is part of the maturing process. Setbacks do not mean that all your support and good work has unravelled, what we learn as we are growing up has a strong bearing on adulthood and hopefully this will lead to him asking for help when needed.

Even as adults, though the dynamic is different parental love and support is desirable. I am sure you will be getting an SOS or two when things have run out ... food, clothing, money, meds  *sighs

Boundaries = ongoing

I am still feeling nervous, but much more relaxed....thanks for your support.  My son has made friends and is socialising.  A big start.  Not sure how everything else is going, but there has been no crisis, so that is great.  Met his new GP and felt reassured by his support for my son.  All I can do now is let him learn, live and hopefully thrive.  On a positive side, I will also have some respite
