Misconceptions about eating disorders

One disorder that is surrounded by too many assumptions and opinions is eating disorders. There are many common misconceptions about eating disorders, one of them being they only affect women, while men can struggle with them as well. Another false belief is that eating disorders are just about food or weight when, in reality, they often stem from deeper emotional and psychological issues. People also usually assume that those with eating disorders are always visibly underweight, but individuals can be of any body size. There's also a myth that eating disorders are simply a choice or an attempt to seek attention, ignoring the complex, often hidden factors behind them. Many also think recovery is linear when, in fact, it can involve setbacks and struggles. Lastly, some assume that eating disorders are only related to vanity, but they can be deeply tied to feelings of control, self-worth, and trauma. It is for this reason that awareness about mental health conditions is essential.
