Re: Jaded towards psychiatrists, but hopeful

Simply attending a therapist (of any training) ... sets up an uneven power dynamic with the client as a vulnerable person. The therapuetic relationship involves a social contract implying self-revelation on the behalf of one party.

I am older now (55) than when I first approached therapists ... 16 year old as outpatient at a hospital.

I am less desperate and needy ... and though I am open ... I am better able to protect myself from the therapist's issues than I was.  But it has taken a lot of experience.

The govt has to realise that simply throwing money at an issue ... like funding counsellors ... does not necessarily fix problems. If the counsellors are not accountable.

I am glad that you posted about your experience .. @chibam it shows how the issues between the sexes get all tangled up ... in client therapist relationship it is called the transference ... it is good for others to read your post as well ... being forewarned can help.

Re the misogyny of it ..    unfortunately sometimes women are purveyors of very misogynist thinking....

Re: Jaded towards psychiatrists, but hopeful

I am currently jaded as anything.  So, yeah.  Been there, done that.

Re: Jaded towards psychiatrists, but hopeful

Great link @CannonSalt

psych evaluation by clients ... is starting

I read a couple about my son's psych that rang true and keep me on a quiet alert.

Yes I know there are horses for courses .. but people's pain and tragedies should not be a cash cow

Re: Jaded towards psychiatrists, but hopeful

Thanks - it was written by Gordon Parker, "an expert in mood disorders, founder of the Black Dog Institute and Scientia Professor at the University of New South Wales." I wish that information on patient rights was as readily available as "What is depression?" leaflets. I'm glad that you were able to find evaluations of your son's psych, and keep an eye on them.

Re: Jaded towards psychiatrists, but hopeful

Excellent link, @CannonSalt, thanks for sharing!

I, too, wish there was more attention for this side of therapy. The stuff that's aimed towards people who are in pain - the ones who haven't yet been in to therapy - is all geared towards getting them to see a therapist. They are bombarded with messages like "There IS help available!" When you take the time to really stop and think about that slogan, you realize that it isn't making any promises about the specific therapist you will end up striking yourself. But the way it's used gives people that once they step across the threshold of the therapist's office, your back on track to a happy life. And it's so easy to believe because you dearly want to believe that it's true.

I would be surprised if many people on the verge of seeking therapy strike anything resembling a significant warning about what they may be letting themselves in for. And as I say, most of them are probably so desperate for solutions that you would really have to be shouting that warning pretty clearly in order to get them to take notice.

As it is, by the time a patient realizes they might be in a bad situation (therapy-wise) the damage may already have been done.

I think that's something that all soon-to-be therapy patients ought to be advised: not only is there a chance that this treatment won't make things better for you, there's also a real risk that it may actually make things worse. Before you go in, make sure you have a way out, just incase you need it.

Re: Jaded towards psychiatrists, but hopeful

I think the field is still new and protocols for checks and balances need to be developed .. which is what gives me the motivation to post ...its not just complaining ... I am glad that there are many who are websavvy ... keep these conversations going

Re: Jaded towards psychiatrists, but hopeful

I guess the challenge is how to reform the Mental Health System to be more empowering to patients when sometimes this is met by great resistance by some Psychiatrists.

Re: Jaded towards psychiatrists, but hopeful

Exactly @ivana

It is not only patient "resistance" that can be a problem....

glad I spent a lot of time colour coding resistors when doing electronics with my deceased brother ... long before I encountered psychoanalytic transference theory .. which is pretty airy fairy ... not truly that scientific or "objective" ...

I believe currently even peer workers on US sites are having credibility problems within workplace ... tho I think peer workers are a good move...

Re: Jaded towards psychiatrists, but hopeful

If you know some personal information about your psych, like last name and the suburb they practice in, you can look them up on the public Australian Health Practictioner Register Agency.  You can find out their educational background, if they speak languages other than English, and when they started practicing, as well as if they've got any current proceedings against them by the HCCC.

Re: Jaded towards psychiatrists, but hopeful

Yep thanks @CannonSalt .... I found some -ve reviews about son's psych ... which kinda rang true ... so we have discussed him as not the life-saving doctor on a pedestal ... but a flawed human being with particular motives and only limited understanding ... but whom we will go along with as we are in public system.
